Based on the true story of Queen Victoria in her last days, and her problematic friendship with an Indian clerk. ‘Victoria & Abdul’ is always engaging with another stunning performance by Judi Dench as the Queen, however, the film itself is only intermittently entertaining. Spending the majority of the time painting the monarchy in a ridiculous light, the audience will at least appreciate the honest and unabashed portrayal of the Queen in her old age. Whilst a little clumsy at times, ‘Victoria & Abdul’ is a sweet, funny and poignant film to savour.
